why is writing something we only do at desks?
writing is more than a mundane task.
I used to think writing in my notes app was cringey. When i’d go through episodes of crippling depression, i would turn to my notes app — writing down any thoughts, feelings, or sentences that would appear in my empty heart. Looking back on them felt odd, like I had been doing it for attention, and those notes would be moved to the bin, sentenced to 30 days rotting away until they were removed from the cloud.
Writing should happen anywhere, a place to jot down inspirations, quotes, or to detail the beauty of the world. Turn writing into something you do at any moment. Write on your phone, in a journal, on a napkin, on the train, while watching the sunset, write wherever feels right.
That word doc you’ve been meaning to start? The assignment that needs to be turned in? A poem that is lying unfinished in a notebook somewhere? Take those outside, sit near a window, open the curtains, go for a walk, or find a bench and write in a notebook.
(be like this little man)
Desks can be nice, but too many people associate desks with mundane tasks — those including the art of pouring out your heart and soul onto a page (I like writing, okay??). Even if you need something to write against, what about a coffee table or a tray while laying on your living room or bedroom floor? Romanticize words, ideas, and inspiration.
thank you for reading! i’m still learning how to write personal essays, so i promise these will get longer and better!
